The giant puffball pictured here is the size of a basketball; found early October
(2005) in semi-open woods.  These mushrooms produce trillions of spores.
Can be found October and into early November, often after heavy rains.

This pristine specimen of Calvatia gigantea was also found early
October (2008) growing in semi-open woods (mixed hardwoods) with
walnut trees present.  Soccer ball sized.

These mature, spore-filled examples of Calvatia gigantea were found in
spring, having over-wintered and still dispersing spores.

Point of attachment to the ground is often only a web of mycelia emerging
from the soil.
